To tell the story of Simond is to tell the story of alpinism itself. Our histories are not simply parallel; they are inseparable, forged in the same valley.
Our story
For over a century and a half at the foot of Mont Blanc, our story has been hammered in steel, a legacy passed from one generation to the next.
The Simond adventure began in Chamonix with Auguste Simond, the family's first blacksmith. In 1870, his nephew Adolphe established the first workshop on the Arve River, laying down a founding principle: the true designer is the alpinist. This co-creation model intensified in 1883 when Adolphe’s brothers, François and Michel, joined him. Together, they quickly launched the brand internationally thanks to Edward Whymper.
The François Simond era marked the shift to series production, launching a dual range (one for experts and one more accessible), with one golden rule: never compromise on safety. The product line expanded to crampons and carabiners, a direct result of the technical expertise already present. This expertise received major recognition in 1929 when the prestigious G.H.M. initiated a landmark partnership with Simond to co-create the mythical Lagarde ice axe, confirming the brand as a key partner to the greatest pioneers.
The Golden Age of alpinism after 1945 initiated a constant dialogue between Claudius Simond and the greatest guides and alpinists of his time (Lachenal, Herzog, Terray, ...). This co-creation led to tools perfectly suited for the highest peaks: Claudius notably designed his first 12-point model with two front points, the "Everest" crampon, specifically to meet Edmund Hillary's needs. This essential alliance between craftsmanship and performance was the basis for the first ascents of Annapurna and Everest, a foundation that still guides Simond today.
When Ludger Simond took the lead, the challenge shifted from conquering the highest summits to mastering new routes. This was the dawn of a new era, obsessed with the most committed lines, the north faces and verticality. Driven by Ludger Simond’s vision, the brand has accompanied the evolution of mountaineering, moving from wood to metal, developing ever lighter and more technical tools alongside the climbers of its time. Staying true to its Chamonix roots and now part of the Decathlon group, Simond continues its commitment: to design, test, and manufacture as close to the mountains as possible.
Building on over 165 years of history, innovation, and deep respect for the mountains, we are now writing a new chapter. The world has shifted and our quest has evolved: reaching performance by fair means. This core design challenge guides our expertise as we serve an expanded community of enthusiasts: trekkers, ski tourers, climbers, and alpinists.
Simond grew up alongside mountain pionneers
Since 1860, Simond gear has accompanied the exploits of pioneers who have marked the history of mountaineering.
The mountains are our heritage and our responsibility. Our priority is their preservation, and we want to build their future with new generations. Guided by the summits and the Alpine spirit, our work is based on precision, sober innovation, and a deep respect for the mountains.
With the peaks as our compass, we embrace the purity of the attempt. The Alpine spirit is a culture of precision, where accuracy is everything, innovation serves with frugality of means, and every choice reflects deep respect for the mountain environment. It’s the way we work, and the mindset we strive to pass on.
At Simond, every product is born from a precise intention: enduring performance. Understated and reliable, our products are the fruit of know-how honed by experience.
The mountains are our heritage, but also our responsibility. Today, our greatest ascent is that of their preservation. Our wish is to walk alongside the generations of today and tomorrow, to be inspired by their vision and to build the mountain of the future together.
